The smartest person in the room does not always win.
Very often, the winner is the person who knows something the others do not.
That is the power of asymmetric information.
In markets, it can mean spotting an undervalued company before everyone else. In business, it can mean understanding a customer problem before competitors do. In technology, it can mean recognising a platform shift before the rest of the industry has adjusted.
And right now, education is full of asymmetric information.
That may be the biggest opportunity in education today.
Because millions of parents, schools and institutions are still operating with assumptions that made sense ten, twenty or even fifty years ago, while a much smaller group is beginning to understand something very different: the cost of expertise is collapsing, the cost of personalisation is collapsing, the cost of creation is collapsing, and the cost of access is collapsing.
Most of the education system has not repriced itself around that reality yet. That gap is where the opportunity lives.
Education still behaves as though expertise is scarce
Traditional schooling was designed for a world in which high-quality instruction was expensive. A good mathematics teacher was scarce. A good language tutor was scarce. A good curriculum was scarce. A well-stocked library was scarce. A laboratory was scarce. Access to experts was scarce.
So education was organised around concentrating scarce expertise in institutions. Put the teacher in front of thirty children. Put the books in one building. Put the laboratory in one place. Put the timetable around the available adults.
That structure was rational. But AI and modern edtech are changing the economics underneath it.
A child can now have access to interactive explanations, instant translation, adaptive practice, coding support, writing feedback, simulated experiments, research help and increasingly capable AI tutors for a fraction of what equivalent human support would once have cost.
The old system is still priced around scarcity. The new world is increasingly built around abundance.
That mismatch creates enormous opportunity.
The advantage is not “being smarter.” It is seeing the shift earlier.
Imagine two parents.
Parent A is highly educated, ambitious and diligent. They focus on the traditional signals: the best school, the strongest exam results, the most prestigious curriculum, the most tutoring and the best university pathway.
Parent B may know less about formal education, but they understand one important shift earlier: the future will reward children who can learn faster, adapt faster and use powerful tools better than those who simply accumulate credentials.
That single insight changes how they allocate time.
Instead of adding another hour of exam preparation, they might spend it on AI literacy, coding, writing, public speaking, research, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, projects, design, making things or learning how to verify information.
Over ten years, that becomes a huge difference. Not because one child is inherently more intelligent. Because one family had better information about where value was moving.
That is asymmetric information in education.
The biggest advantage today may simply be knowing what schools have not yet caught up with
Several realities are still unevenly understood.
AI can already provide one-to-one educational support at extraordinary scale. Many traditional homework tasks are becoming poor proxies for actual understanding. Portfolios and demonstrated capability are becoming more important alongside credentials. AI literacy is becoming foundational rather than optional. Children can increasingly learn across ages, subjects and geographies instead of moving through one standardised path. The cost of building things has collapsed. And information itself is no longer the scarce asset.
Judgment is. Curiosity is. Taste is. Verification is. The ability to ask the right question is.
The person who understands these shifts early can design a radically better education without necessarily spending more money.
This is why the opportunity is so large
The education market is unusual because the pain is everywhere, but the language for describing it is still weak.
Parents know something feels wrong. Children are exhausted. Teachers are overloaded. Schools add more technology but often preserve the same underlying model. Universities worry about AI-generated work. Employers complain about graduates lacking practical skills. Students wonder why they are memorising material a machine can retrieve instantly.
Everyone can feel the pressure. But not everyone understands the structural change.
That matters because markets become interesting when there is a gap between what people think is happening and what is actually happening. Education currently has that gap everywhere.
A parent may think they need a better tutor. The real need may be a better personalised learning system. A school may think it needs better digital worksheets. The real opportunity may be adaptive, interactive learning. A teenager may think they need another credential. The real advantage may be building a portfolio around actual work. A teacher may think AI is primarily a cheating threat. The larger opportunity may be using it to reduce administrative work and increase time spent coaching students.
The people who understand the second-order effects will have an edge.
The opportunity is not just technological
The obvious reading of the education opportunity is: AI will make better education software. True. But incomplete.
The deeper opportunity is that AI changes what education should optimise for.
If information is abundant, education should not spend so much time rewarding information reproduction. If AI can generate first drafts, education should place more value on judgment and revision. If AI can tutor, teachers can spend more time mentoring. If children can access world-class material anywhere, geography becomes less restrictive. If content can be personalised instantly, age-based pacing becomes less defensible. If creation is cheap, project-based learning becomes much easier. If careers change quickly, adaptability becomes more important than narrow preparation for one profession.
The technology changes the objective function. That is much bigger than adding AI to classrooms.
A child who understands AI properly may have the same kind of advantage that early internet users once had
Think back to the late 1990s. Using the internet was not initially an extraordinary skill. But understanding what the internet meant was incredibly valuable.
The people who realised early that distribution was changing built new businesses. The people who understood that search would matter built around search. The people who understood e-commerce before it was obvious had years of advantage.
Education is entering a similar period.
A child who merely knows how to type prompts will not have much of an edge. That will become universal. But a child who understands how to frame problems, work iteratively with AI, verify outputs, combine multiple tools, research deeply, build products, analyse information, automate repetitive tasks and maintain independent judgment will have a much more meaningful advantage.
This is not about teaching kids to “use ChatGPT.” It is about teaching them how to operate in a world where intelligence is increasingly available on demand.

The most valuable educational asset may become agency
Agency is the ability to act without waiting for permission.
To decide: I do not understand this, so I will learn it. I want to build this, so I will figure out how. This source looks suspicious, so I will verify it. This tool does not work, so I will find another. This idea failed, so I will try a different version.
The industrial education system often rewards compliance because compliance makes large groups easier to manage. The emerging economy rewards agency because unpredictable problems cannot be solved by waiting for instructions.
The child who is exceptionally good at following the path may eventually lose to the child who knows how to create one.
Again, not because the second child is smarter. Because they possess a more useful model of how the world now works.
There is also an arbitrage in time
This may be the most practical part of the opportunity.
Many families assume that educational excellence requires more hours: more homework, more tutoring, more worksheets and more exam preparation.
But personalised technology can increasingly reduce the amount of time required to achieve mastery.
If a child can understand a concept in thirty focused minutes with adaptive support instead of spending two hours in a group lesson, the difference is not merely efficiency. It creates time arbitrage.
The saved time can be reinvested into reading, sports, projects, business, music, relationships, travel, making things, independent research, rest or simply childhood.
A family that understands this may give its child thousands of extra high-quality hours before adulthood.
That is a powerful informational advantage.
The education winners of the next decade may look surprisingly ordinary at first
They may not be the institutions with the grandest buildings.
They may be small schools with exceptional AI integration, homeschool networks, micro-schools, tutoring platforms, adaptive-learning systems, project-based academies, credentialing alternatives, AI-native curriculum companies, portfolio platforms, specialist communities, teacher tools, parent-guidance businesses and assessment systems designed for an AI world.
Many may initially look less impressive than traditional institutions. That is often how asymmetric opportunities appear. They look small before the old consensus breaks.
Parents have the same opportunity
This is not just an investment thesis. It is a parenting thesis.
A family does not need to correctly predict the exact jobs of 2036. That would be impossible. They need to recognise a few durable truths earlier than everyone else.
Knowledge is becoming cheap. Personalised instruction is becoming cheaper. Technology will keep changing. AI will become embedded in almost every knowledge profession. Credentials will remain useful, but they will not be sufficient. Adaptability will matter. Communication will matter. Judgment will matter. Physical and emotional health will matter. Learning how to learn will matter enormously.
Once you understand that, the educational strategy becomes clearer: teach the foundations, then build adaptability on top.
The mistake is waiting until everyone agrees
Once every school has fully adapted to AI, the informational advantage is gone. Once every university has redesigned assessment, the advantage is gone. Once every parent understands AI literacy, the advantage is gone. Once every child has an excellent personal tutor, the advantage is gone.
Asymmetric information is valuable precisely because it is not yet evenly distributed.
The opportunity exists in the lag. And education may currently have one of the largest lags anywhere in the economy.
Technology is moving at one speed. Institutions are moving at another. Parents are somewhere in between.
The people who close that gap first will not necessarily be the richest, the most academically accomplished or the people who scored highest on an exam twenty years ago. They will simply understand the change sooner.
The smartest guy in the room may still lose
That is the uncomfortable lesson.
A brilliant student who spends ten years becoming exceptional at a game whose value is declining can lose to a less traditionally gifted student who learns the new game earlier.
The smartest school can lose to the smallest school with a better model. The most prestigious institution can lose relevance faster than it expects.
The parent who knows every admission requirement can still miss the bigger question: what kind of person will succeed when intelligence itself becomes abundant?
That is the real educational opportunity today. Not abandoning knowledge. Not worshipping technology. Not assuming AI will solve everything. But recognising earlier than most people that the scarce resource is changing.
It used to be information.
Now increasingly, it is the ability to know what matters, what is true, what to learn, what to ignore, what to build, what to question and what to do next.
That is asymmetric information. And in education today, it may be worth more than being the smartest person in the room.
