Most people's mental model of AI is a vending machine: put in a question, get out an answer. That's the least interesting thing it can do, and if it's all your kids ever use it for, they'll get a bit lazier and not much smarter. The genuinely powerful use β the one worth teaching deliberately β is to treat AI as a thinking partner and, specifically, as a sparring partner: something to argue with, be challenged by, and sharpen your own ideas against. Not a machine that hands you conclusions, but one that stress-tests the conclusions you bring.
Picture it in action. Your teenager holds a position β maybe an opinion about a book, a stance on a historical question, an argument for an essay. Instead of asking the AI what to think, they state their view and ask it to push back: "What's the strongest objection to this? Where is my reasoning weak? What am I missing?" Suddenly they have a tireless, well-read opponent who will challenge them all day without ego, without getting bored, and without letting a lazy argument slide. That's not outsourcing thought. That's a whetstone for it.
This works so well because real thinking is fundamentally dialogic β we sharpen ideas by having them challenged, which is the whole reason debate, Socratic dialogue, and good seminars exist. The problem is that a live human sparring partner of the right caliber isn't always available at 4pm on a Tuesday. AI is. It can play devil's advocate, surface counterarguments, poke holes, and force your kid to defend or revise their position β the exact mental workout that builds genuinely robust thinking.

The critical move, which you have to teach explicitly, is keeping your child as the author and the AI as the challenger β never the reverse. The kid supplies the ideas, the position, the writing, the judgment. The AI supplies resistance. The moment it flips β the moment the AI is generating the ideas and the kid is just accepting them β the whole benefit collapses into passive consumption, and you're back at the vending machine. "Argue against me" builds a thinker. "Write it for me" builds a dependent. Same tool, opposite outcomes, and the difference is entirely in how you frame the ask.
Homeschooling is the ideal place to cultivate this, because you can teach the stance directly and watch it develop over time. Model it yourself: "Let's see if we can poke holes in your argument β ask the AI for the three best counterpoints." Show them how to demand rigor from the machine rather than answers. Pair it with real substance β solid reading, actual knowledge, writing practice β so they have genuine ideas worth sparring over. You're raising someone who instinctively reaches for the most powerful tool of their generation to make their own thinking stronger, not to avoid thinking at all.
So teach your kids to argue with the machine. Have them bring their ideas and ask the AI to attack them, challenge them, find the weak spots. Then have them defend or revise, and come out with a sharper, better-defended position than they started with. Used this way, AI becomes exactly what a great teacher or a brilliant, contrarian friend provides β a mind to push against. That's one of the most valuable intellectual habits you can give a child for the world they're growing into: not the answer, but a better way to test their own.
