There's a popular panic that goes: if AI can answer any question, write any essay, and solve any problem, then what on earth is left for a kid to learn? It's worth taking seriously, mostly because it accidentally reveals the answer. When answers become free and instant, their value nosedives toward zero. The scarce, precious thing in a world drowning in answers is not the answer. It's the question. And questions come from curiosity β which no machine can feel on your child's behalf, no matter how many billion parameters it has.
Think about what an AI actually is: a magnificent engine for responding. It waits. It answers, brilliantly and tirelessly, whatever it's asked. But it never wonders. It doesn't lie awake bothered by something it saw. It doesn't notice that a fact is weird, or that two ideas seem to contradict, or that a question everyone accepts might be quietly wrong. It has no itch of not-knowing demanding to be scratched. All of that β the noticing, the puzzlement, the desperate need to find out β is curiosity, and curiosity is precisely the human faculty that decides what gets asked in the first place.
This flips the whole job of education on its head. If machines will handle recall, computation, and first-draft everything, then the most important thing we can grow in a child is not a head stuffed with facts they could look up in half a second, but a live, durable curiosity β the reflex to notice what's interesting and chase it past the point where anyone assigned it. A curious kid with powerful tools is a genuine force of nature. A powerful tool paired with an incurious kid is just a very expensive way to avoid thinking.

And here homeschooling has an almost unfair advantage, because curiosity is fragile and schools are often, entirely by accident, brutal on it. A curriculum that must be covered by a certain date literally cannot afford to stop when a kid asks a fascinating off-topic question β the question is a delay, and the delay is a scheduling problem. So the natural human impulse to wonder gets gently, repeatedly discouraged, until a lot of children quietly learn that curiosity is something you do on your own time, definitely not during "learning." That is a heartbreaking thing to teach, and it's usually taught with the best of intentions.
At home you get to do the opposite. When your kid asks why the sky is blue, or whether numbers ever end, or how the Egyptians hauled those ridiculous stones, you have the freedom to stop and chase it β to say "let's find out" and actually mean it. Those detours aren't interruptions of the education. They are the education, the exact habit you most want to build. Every time you honor a real question, you teach your child that their curiosity is valuable and worth acting on. Do that for years and it becomes permanently who they are.
So no, don't lie awake fearing that AI will make your child's mind unnecessary. Fear instead the quiet erosion of curiosity that a hurried, answer-shaped, box-ticking education causes β because that's the thing the future will actually reward or punish. Let the machines answer the questions. Raise the kid who supplies the wonder: who notices, who asks, who cannot let it go. Use worksheets and tools to build the skills, absolutely β but guard the curiosity above all. In a world of infinite answers, the person who knows what's worth asking will never, ever be replaceable.
