Every generation picks up a new basic skill, one that moves from "specialist knowledge" to "everyone needs this." Reading was once a rare, elite skill; now it's foundational. Ours is AI literacy: knowing what these tools genuinely do well, where they confidently lie, how to check them, and when to ignore them entirely. It sits beside reading, writing, and arithmetic now — not above them and definitely not instead of them. A kid who can read, reason, and think critically about AI is enormously more capable than one who can only do the first three or only do the last.
The urgency is real because these tools are extraordinary and extraordinarily confident when they're wrong. A large language model will produce a beautifully-worded, authoritative, completely fabricated answer without the faintest flicker of doubt. A kid who takes AI output as gospel is in genuine trouble; a kid who's learned to treat it as a smart-but-unreliable collaborator — helpful, fast, and to be verified — has a superpower. The difference between those two kids is entirely a matter of what an adult took the time to teach them.
Here's where homeschooling has a real edge: you can teach AI literacy openly, instead of pretending the tools don't exist or banning them outright. Many schools, understandably overwhelmed, have defaulted to "no AI, it's cheating," which mostly teaches kids to use it in secret and badly. At home you can do the honest, useful thing: let your child use AI right in front of you, then talk about it. Where did it help? Where did it fabricate? How would we check? That running conversation is the literacy, and it can't happen where the tools are forbidden.

Make it concrete and a little bit fun. Ask the AI something your family actually knows the answer to, and catch it being wrong — kids love catching a confident machine in a mistake, and the lesson lands hard. Have it help draft something, then edit its work together and notice what it got lazy or generic about. Use it to explain a concept, then verify the explanation against a worksheet or a trusted source. Every one of these builds the reflexive skepticism and skill that separate a fooled kid from a capable one.
It's worth being clear about what AI literacy is not. It's not "let the machine do the work." A child still needs the underlying skills — you cannot judge whether an AI's math is right if you can't do math, and you can't spot a fabricated historical claim if you know no history. So the old basics matter more in the AI age, not less; they're the foundation that makes verification possible. AI literacy sits on top of real knowledge. Skip the foundation and "literacy" collapses into blind trust.
So add it to your homeschool's list of basics, right alongside the reading and the math. Skepticism and skill, together. A child who leaves your home able to read deeply, reason clearly, and use AI wisely — knowing its powers, its lies, and how to tell them apart — is prepared for their actual future in a way that no amount of memorizing facts a machine can recite ever could be. That's the new literacy. The families teaching it now are giving their kids a serious head start.
