RenΓ© Descartes β the philosopher-mathematician who fused algebra and geometry into the coordinate plane every student now uses (yes, the x and y axes are his fault) β built his entire philosophy on a radical, almost bratty move: he decided to doubt everything. Every belief he'd been handed, every "obvious" truth, every authority β all of it suspended until he could find something he genuinely couldn't doubt. He stripped his own mind back to the studs and tried to rebuild knowledge from a foundation he could actually see.
What he found at the bottom is one of the most famous lines in the history of thought: I think, therefore I am. He could doubt almost anything β his senses, the world, whether he was dreaming β but he could not doubt that something was doing the doubting. The very act of doubting proved a thinker existed. From that single unshakable point, he tried to rebuild the rest of knowledge on solid ground. Whatever you make of the philosophy, the method is dazzling: refuse to accept a claim until you can see why it's true for yourself.
Teaching children to ask "how do we actually know that?" is teaching them to think, full stop. It's the difference between a mind that passively receives whatever it's told and a mind that evaluates, questions, and tests. And it has never been a more urgent skill than right now, in an era where confident-sounding claims β from the internet, from AI, from viral posts, from authorities of every stripe β arrive faster than anyone can check them. A child who instinctively asks "how do we know?" is far harder to fool than one trained mainly to absorb and repeat.

Homeschooling has room for that gloriously dangerous question in a way a packed, test-driven curriculum usually doesn't. When your kid asks "but why is that true?" or "who says?" you can treat it as the best possible development rather than an inconvenient delay. You can stop and actually investigate β trace a claim to its source, run the experiment, work out the proof, notice when something everyone "knows" turns out to be shaky. A classroom racing to cover the syllabus rarely has time to honor real doubt. You do.
This is worlds away from teaching cynicism, and the distinction matters. Descartes didn't doubt in order to sneer or to believe nothing; he doubted in order to build something solid. The goal isn't a kid who reflexively rejects everything, but a kid who withholds full belief until they understand the reasons β and then holds their well-founded conclusions with genuine confidence. That's not corrosive skepticism; it's intellectual honesty, and it's the foundation of both good science and clear thinking. Doubt as a tool for building, not for tearing down.
So invite the Descartes question into your homeschool. When your child challenges a claim β even yours β resist the urge to shut it down with "because I said so," and instead say "great, let's figure out how we'd actually know." Do the math, learn the facts, but teach the deeper habit underneath: understand why, don't just accept. A child who learns to doubt well β carefully, honestly, in order to build on solid ground β will never be easy to fool. In the age of the confident-sounding lie, that may be the most valuable thing you can teach.
