Born in 1887 in southern India, hundreds of miles from any elite university, he had almost no formal training. What he had was a borrowed book of results and an attention span that makes the rest of us, scrolling our phones between paragraphs, look like startled goldfish.
Working almost entirely alone, Ramanujan filled notebook after notebook with thousands of results — many so bizarre and original that when he finally mailed them to Cambridge, the great mathematician G. H. Hardy initially assumed it was a prank. Then he looked closer and nearly fell off his chair. Hardy later said some of the formulas "defeated me completely," and that they had to be true because "no one would have the imagination to invent them." Ramanujan is living, historical, undeniable proof that serious learning does not require a fancy building, a credentialed expert for every subject, or a facility with a laminator. It requires good material, a curious mind, and the freedom to sit with an idea for as long as it takes. The real bottleneck in most education was never the buildings. It was attention — the deep, unhurried focus a bell-driven classroom actively demolishes and a home can lovingly protect.

And honestly, his story feels even more relevant now than it did a century ago. Ramanujan had to wait for the mail to reach the world's experts. Your child can pull up a free lecture from a world authority, ask an AI to unpack a proof at 1am, and join a global community of fellow nerds before dinner. He changed mathematics with a single book. Kids today are handed the entire library of human knowledge and a supercomputer, and we ask them to leave it in a locker and sit in rows. The mismatch is almost comical.
For homeschooling parents, the takeaway is beautifully practical: when your child shows a spark for something, feed it while it's hot. Don't pack up the fascination because a period ended — there are no periods. Give them a rich problem, a clear math worksheet to build real fluency, and permission to keep going. Ramanujan's genius wasn't that he had access to more. It's that he was allowed, by circumstance, to go deep. You can grant that permission on purpose.
