Turing and the Machines That Think

Before there were computers, Turing imagined one — and asked whether it could think.

If you want to blow your kid's mind, tell them this: the computer was invented before the computer existed. Decades before anyone built a working machine, a young British mathematician named Alan Turing dreamed one up as a pure thought experiment — an imaginary device, now called a Turing machine, that could in principle compute anything computable. He basically invented the blueprint for every laptop, phone, and game console on the planet using nothing but a pencil, some paper, and an absolutely ferocious imagination.

Then he asked the question we are still, uneasily, living inside. In 1950 he proposed what became the Turing test: if you're chatting with something and genuinely can't tell whether it's a human or a machine, in what meaningful sense is it not thinking? Seventy-odd years later your family is casually arguing with a chatbot that would have detonated Turing's contemporaries' brains, and his question has gone from philosophy seminar to dinner-table reality. Kids today are growing up on the far side of a line Turing drew before their grandparents were born.

Turing's story also carries a hard, human lesson worth telling age-appropriately. He helped crack Nazi codes and is credited with shortening World War II and saving countless lives — and his own country then persecuted him for being gay, with tragic consequences. It's a stark reminder that societies can be catastrophically wrong about people, that "everyone agrees" is not the same as "correct," and that the geniuses who move us forward are frequently the ones who don't fit the era's narrow rules. That's a big, honest conversation, and homeschooling gives you the room to have it properly.

Why does telling this history matter for a modern kid? Because the technology now running their lives can feel like magic that fell from the sky, and magic is impossible to think critically about. Understanding that AI descends from a specific human, wrestling with a specific mathematical question, in a specific messy historical moment, turns "magic" back into "engineering." And engineering is something you can question, understand, improve, and refuse to be fooled by. That shift — from awe to understanding — is the whole foundation of digital literacy.

There's also something delightfully homeschool-friendly about Turing's method: he did revolutionary work by thinking, not by having access to a fancy lab full of equipment. His most famous machine was imaginary. His most famous idea was a question. This is the opposite of the belief that real learning requires a big institutional facility. A kid at a kitchen table with a curious mind and a hard question is working in exactly Turing's tradition — and now, unlike him, they can test their ideas against a real thinking machine that afternoon.

So make him a character in your homeschool. Tell the story of the man who imagined computers into being, asked whether machines could think, helped win a war, was failed badly by his own society, and reshaped the future anyway. Pair it with a little logic, a little math, maybe some beginner coding, and you're not just teaching facts — you're handing your child the origin story of their entire technological world. Understanding where the machine came from is the first, essential step to using it wisely instead of being quietly used by it.
