Meet the most productive mathematician who ever lived: Leonhard Euler, an eighteenth-century Swiss powerhouse who wrote so much mathematics that scholars are, no exaggeration, still working through the backlog of publishing it all. He casually invented notation so natural we forget a human had to think of it β the little "e," the function notation f(x), the use of Ο the way we use it today. Now for the part that should stop every parent in their tracks: Euler did an enormous amount of this work after going blind. His output actually increased in his blind years. When your child claims they can't possibly do their math because the pencil is the wrong color, you now have a rebuttal locked and loaded.
But the real lesson of Euler isn't the tragedy or the triumph β it's the consistency. He wasn't a flash of lightning who did one brilliant thing and coasted. He showed up to the same craft, day after day, for decades, because he genuinely loved it. This is the single most under-told truth about genius: it usually looks less like a dramatic burst of inspiration and far more like a person who kept turning up to the work, with affection, long after everyone else got bored. There's a lovely modern echo here, too. Euler had to hold his colossal calculations in his own memory because there were no machines to offload them onto. Your child has a calculator, a computer, and an AI that will happily grind any number. But that makes Euler's real skill β seeing the structure, choosing what to compute, knowing which idea matters β more valuable, not less. The machines handle the arithmetic Euler did in his head. What they can't replicate is the daily, loving, structured thinking that told him what was worth computing in the first place.
So take Euler as your homeschool patron saint of not-giving-up. Do a little math every day. Keep it warm, keep it consistent, keep it low-drama. Tell your kids about the blind man who out-produced entire academies by simply refusing to stop, out of sheer love for the work. It teaches the thing that actually predicts success far better than raw cleverness: stamina, affection for the craft, and the humble, unglamorous, world-beating habit of showing up again tomorrow.
