Richard Feynman β Nobel-winning physicist, legendary teacher, and world-class mischief-maker β had a test for whether you actually understand something, and it's brutally simple: try to explain it in plain language, as if to a beginner, with no jargon to hide behind. The moment you find yourself reaching for fancy terms to paper over a gap, you've located the exact spot you don't really understand yet. Jargon, in Feynman's view, is often just a sophisticated way of fooling yourself into thinking you get it.
This has been distilled into what people now call the Feynman technique, and it's one of the most powerful study tools ever articulated. Pick a concept. Try to teach it, out loud and simply, to an imaginary twelve-year-old. Wherever you stumble, stall, or start hiding behind big words β that's your gap. Go back, fill it, and try again. It works because genuine understanding and the ability to explain simply turn out to be nearly the same thing. You don't truly know it until you can make it plain.
And here is why this is a homeschooling superpower rather than just a nice idea: you have a beginner right there. In fact, you have the perfect setup for the most effective version of the technique β learning by teaching. Have your child explain a concept back to you as if you know nothing. Have them teach it to a younger sibling, a stuffed animal, or you-playing-dumb. A machine can generate a flawless-sounding explanation of anything in half a second β but a kid reading that explanation hasn't necessarily understood a word of it. Understanding isn't receiving a good explanation; it's being able to produce one from your own mind. Feynman's test is precisely the thing that distinguishes "the AI explained it to me" from "I actually get it." In a world of infinite generated answers, the ability to explain it yourself is the real proof of learning.
So build the Feynman test into your homeschool as a habit, not an occasional trick. After a lesson, don't just ask "did you get it?" β ask your child to teach it back to you, simply, with no jargon, as if you'd never heard of it. Do a worksheet to build the fluency, then have them explain why the method works to a younger sibling. The stumbles will show you both exactly what still needs work, and the act of explaining will cement what's solid. If they can make it simple, they know it. If they can't, you've just found tomorrow's lesson.
