Alexander Grothendieck was one of the most influential β and most gloriously strange β mathematicians of the twentieth century, and he had a way of describing how he solved problems that every homeschooling parent should steal. He compared it to the rising sea. Rather than attacking a hard problem head-on with a hammer, he would patiently build up the surrounding theory β raising the water level, so to speak β until the once-impossible problem was simply submerged, softened, and dissolved. The nut didn't get cracked by force. The whole landscape rose until it floated free.
Picture it literally. There's a hard rock β your problem β and you could spend years hurling yourself at it with a chisel, chipping and straining and getting nowhere. Or you could patiently let the sea rise around it, and one day the rock is quietly underwater and the problem you couldn't crack has simply... gone soft. Grothendieck's genius was rarely brute force. It was building so much understanding around a problem that the problem stopped being hard, almost as a side effect.
This is a spectacularly useful model for teaching, and it runs against every instinct. When a kid is stuck, our reflex is to make them push harder on that exact problem β more repetitions, more effort, more strain against the same rock. But sometimes the real answer is Grothendieck's: don't push harder on the problem, widen the understanding around it. Back up. Build the context. Strengthen the foundations underneath. Very often the stuck point quietly dissolves once the surrounding sea has risen, without your child ever having to bludgeon the original rock at all.

Concretely: a kid stuck on long division might not need forty more long-division problems. They might need their multiplication facts to become truly automatic, or their number sense to deepen, or a better grip on place value. Raise those waters and the division floats free. A kid stuck on essay writing might not need to grind the essay; they might need to read more, talk through their ideas, and build the underlying thinking. The stuck spot is often a symptom of low water elsewhere, not a rock that needs a bigger hammer.
Homeschooling is ideally built for this rising-sea approach, because you're not trapped by a syllabus that demands the class conquer this specific rock by Friday. You have the freedom to zoom out β to spend a week strengthening foundations with solid practice, building context, deepening the surrounding understanding β and then return to the hard problem to find it's no longer hard. A classroom rarely has that luxury; it has to keep hammering the rock on schedule. You can let the sea rise.
So the next time your child hits a wall, resist the urge to just pile on more attempts at the same wall. Ask Grothendieck's question instead: is the problem really the problem, or is the water just low around it? Build the surrounding understanding, strengthen what's underneath, widen the context β and watch how often the impossible thing quietly softens and gives way. It's a gentler, deeper, more patient way to teach, and it happens to be how one of history's great minds moved mountains: not by force, but by patiently raising the sea.
