Hypatia of Alexandria

One of the ancient world's great mathematicians taught in the open air of Alexandria.

Long before homeschooling was a movement, long before universities as we know them existed, one of the ancient world's most celebrated mathematicians and astronomers taught in the open air of Alexandria β€” and she was a woman. Hypatia lived around 1,600 years ago, wrote commentaries on the hardest mathematical texts of her day, built scientific instruments, and drew students from across the Mediterranean who came specifically to learn from her. In an era that offered women almost no room for such a life, she carved one out with sheer brilliance.

Her story is a bracing reminder of just how old the love of learning is. We tend to imagine that serious education is a modern invention, delivered through modern institutions, and that anything outside that system is somehow lesser or newer or riskier. Hypatia predates the modern classroom by a millennium and a half. People have been gathering to think hard about mathematics, the stars, and the nature of things for as long as there have been people β€” in gardens, marketplaces, homes, and the open air, not just in purpose-built rooms with bells.

Telling children the long, wide history of ideas gives them something the standard curriculum usually can't: a true sense of scale. Mathematics didn't spring fully formed from a few European men in the last three centuries. It was built across thousands of years and many cultures β€” the Islamic world, India, China, ancient Greece, and beyond β€” by an astonishingly diverse cast, including women like Hypatia who had to defy their entire society to participate. A kid who knows this grows up with a bigger, more accurate, more inviting picture of who gets to do this stuff.

Homeschooling is uniquely suited to teaching this wide-angle history, because you're not confined to the tidy, compressed version that fits a standardized test. You can wander. You can spend an afternoon on Hypatia, another on al-Khwarizmi (whose name gave us the word "algorithm"), another on the mathematicians of ancient India. You can teach the story of human knowledge as the sprawling, global, multi-millennium adventure it actually was, rather than a short highlight reel of the usual four names.

There's a poignant, honest note in Hypatia's story too, which older kids can handle: she was ultimately killed by a mob amid the political and religious turmoil of her city. It's a hard reminder that societies can turn violently against learning and against the people who embody it, and that the pursuit of knowledge has never been safe or guaranteed. That's not a reason to despair; it's a reason to value it. The freedom to learn openly, which your kids enjoy, was fought for and is precious precisely because it hasn't always existed.

So make Hypatia part of your homeschool's story of mathematics. Do the math, and tell your children about the woman who taught the hardest ideas of her age in the open air of Alexandria, sixteen centuries ago. It teaches that the love of learning is ancient and universal, that brilliance has always shown up in people the powerful tried to exclude, and that the wide human story of knowledge is far richer than the narrow official version. Hypatia earned her place in that story, and your kids should know she is in it.
