Ada Lovelace, the First Programmer

A century before computers, Ada Lovelace saw what they could become.

More than a century before anyone built a working computer, a young woman wrote the first computer program β€” for a machine that was never even completed. Ada Lovelace, working in the 1840s with Charles Babbage's designs for his mechanical "Analytical Engine," wrote what is widely regarded as the first algorithm intended to be carried out by a machine. She was programming a computer that existed only on paper, decades before the technology to build it caught up with the idea. Software, in a real sense, predates hardware β€” and a woman got there first.

But the truly remarkable part isn't the program. It's the vision. Babbage largely saw his engine as a fancy calculator, a machine for crunching numbers. Lovelace saw further than its own inventor. She grasped that if a machine could manipulate symbols according to rules, it wasn't limited to numbers at all β€” it could, she speculated, one day compose music, produce graphics, and manipulate any kind of information you could represent symbolically. She imagined the general-purpose computer, and even a glimmer of creative computing, from a machine that didn't exist. That's not calculation. That's prophecy.

Her story is a gift for homeschoolers on several fronts at once, and it deserves a proper afternoon. It links mathematics, imagination, and the entire history of computing that produced the AI now sitting in your kid's pocket. It shows that the biggest breakthroughs come from people who ask "what if?" and see past the obvious use of a thing. And β€” crucially β€” it puts a brilliant woman at the very origin point of the technology that defines your child's world, which is a fact worth planting early and firmly.

That last point matters more than it might seem. The tech world your kids are growing into still wrestles with the myth that computing is somehow a male domain β€” a myth that is not only false but historically backwards, given that the first programmer was a woman and that women were central to early computing for decades. When a kid, especially a daughter, grows up knowing that Ada Lovelace was there at the very beginning, dreaming the whole thing up, they carry a truer and more empowering picture of who this field belongs to. Spoiler, again: everyone. From the start.

There's also a beautiful lesson about imagination as a serious intellectual skill. Lovelace's superpower wasn't just mathematical competence β€” plenty of people had that. It was the imaginative leap, the ability to look at a number-crunching machine and envision it making music. In an age obsessed with measurable, testable skills, it's worth reminding kids that imagination β€” the "what if?", the seeing-past-the-obvious β€” is not a frivolous extra. It's often the exact faculty that produces the biggest breakthroughs. And it's one that unhurried, curiosity-driven homeschooling is especially good at protecting.

So make Ada Lovelace a character in your homeschool. Do the math, maybe dabble in some beginner coding, and tell the story of the woman who wrote software for a computer that didn't exist and imagined what computers could become a century before they could do it. It teaches that the future is dreamed up by people bold enough to ask "what if?", that mathematics and imagination are partners rather than opposites, and that girls have been at the very center of the computing story since before there were computers. Let your kids know she was first. It changes how they see themselves in the story.
