Mirzakhani and the Shape of Surfaces

The first woman to win the Fields Medal called math like reading a novel.

In 2014, Maryam Mirzakhani became the first woman ever to win the Fields Medal, mathematics' closest equivalent to a Nobel Prize. Take a second on that: the award has existed since 1936, and it took until 2014 for the committee to hand one to a woman β€” not because women couldn't do the math, but because the field spent most of a century treating them as visitors. Mirzakhani, born in Iran and working on the fiendish geometry of curved surfaces, walked through that door and held it open behind her.

Here's the detail every homeschooling parent should love. Mirzakhani described doing mathematics as slow, patient, and immersive β€” "like being lost in a jungle," she said, sketching enormous doodles on giant sheets of paper on the floor while her young daughter assumed mum was just making art. She was in no hurry. She let herself get lost. She played. This is roughly the exact opposite of the timed-test, race-to-the-answer image of math that most kids absorb, and it came from one of the greatest mathematicians of her generation.

That contrast is worth teaching directly. The classroom model of math β€” speed drills, ticking clocks, one right answer produced fast under pressure β€” bears almost no resemblance to how real, deep mathematics actually gets done. Real math is slow, exploratory, often playful, full of dead ends and giant doodles and long stretches of productive confusion. When we train kids that math means "fast and right or you're bad at it," we're not preparing them for mathematics. We're inoculating them against it.

Homeschooling can hand a child exactly the unhurried, doodling, wondering space that real mathematical thinking needs. There's no bell to cut off a good problem. A kid can spread paper on the floor and get lost for an hour. They can sit with a puzzle overnight and solve it in the shower. This isn't slacking; it's how the discipline actually works at the highest level, and you can let your child work that way from the start instead of unlearning the panic later.

It matters, too, that Mirzakhani is a role model who breaks two stereotypes at once β€” not only "math is for boys" but "math is a cold, fast, rigid thing." She was a woman, an immigrant, a mother, and a deeply playful thinker who treated hard problems like a jungle to wander rather than a test to sprint. For a kid quietly deciding whether math is "for people like me," that's a bigger, warmer, truer picture than any textbook usually offers. And homeschooling lets you choose to put her in the story.

So when you do math at home, borrow her tempo. Let hard problems breathe. Hand your kid a big sheet of paper and permission to make a mess. Praise the wandering, not just the arriving. And tell them about the woman who got joyfully lost in the jungle of curved surfaces and came back with a Fields Medal. Mirzakhani died far too young, in 2017, but the way she worked β€” slow, playful, unhurried, unstoppable β€” is a gift you can hand your children at the kitchen table, no medal required.
