Terence Tao and the Myth of the Lone Genius

A modern prodigy who insists genius is mostly hard, patient, shared work.

Terence Tao is, by wide agreement, one of the greatest living mathematicians β€” a former child prodigy, a Fields Medalist, the kind of mind that makes other brilliant mathematicians a bit weak at the knees. So you might expect him to be insufferable about his own genius. Instead, refreshingly, he spends a lot of energy dismantling the myth of genius entirely. On his widely-read blog he's written plainly that you do not have to be a genius to do mathematics β€” that the field runs on hard work, careful writing, collaboration, and being wrong on the way to being right.

Let that sink in, because it's coming from someone who genuinely could coast on raw talent. Tao emphasizes the unglamorous stuff: showing up, writing things down clearly, working with others, grinding through the parts that don't come easily, and treating being wrong as a normal step rather than a verdict. The prodigy is, in effect, telling everyone to stop worshiping prodigies. Talent opens the door, he says, but the room beyond it is furnished with effort, persistence, and community β€” the things anyone can actually cultivate.

This message is pure gold for homeschooling families, and doubly so for those with a kid who seems "gifted." The great danger for a bright child is that they get praised for being smart β€” and then, terrified of losing that label, start avoiding anything hard where they might struggle or fail. This is the well-documented trap that psychologist Carol Dweck describes in her work on mindset: praise the fixed trait ("you're so smart") and you build a fragile kid; praise the process ("you worked hard on that") and you build a resilient one.

Tao's whole posture is the antidote. Praise the work, not the cleverness. Celebrate the persistence through a hard problem, the willingness to be wrong and try again, the careful writing-up of a messy idea. When your child struggles with a concept, don't rescue them instantly and don't frame it as a sign they're "not a math person" β€” frame it as the completely normal experience of doing real math, exactly as the greatest living mathematician describes it. Struggle isn't the absence of ability. It's the presence of learning.

There's a collaboration lesson in Tao, too, that pushes against the lone-genius fantasy. Much of his most celebrated work has been done with others β€” huge collaborative projects, ideas built by many minds passing them around. Even at the very summit of the field, mathematics turns out to be social. For a homeschooling family, that's permission to seek out co-ops, online communities, math circles, and fellow enthusiasts. Deep thinking needs solitude, yes, but it also grows in company, even for the Fields Medalists.

So take Terence Tao as your homeschool's reality check on genius. Do the math, day after day, and praise the effort that goes into it rather than any innate spark. Teach your kids that being stuck is normal, being wrong is part of the process, and hard work plus collaboration beats raw talent that's afraid to struggle. The greatest living mathematician says so himself, on the record. Raise a child who keeps going when it gets hard β€” that, far more than cleverness, is what actually produces the people who change the field.
